Peter Chao and More: Vancouver ComedyFest, through Sept. 26

The seventh annual Global Comedy Festival is in full swing across Vancouver.  Through Sept. 26, the festival will be showcasing dozens of contemporary and alternative comedians at venues throughout the city, including the Yale, Vogue Theatre and Commodore Ballroom downtown.  Tickets vary in price and can be purchased online at

This year’s festival is jam-packed with funnymen and women.  Last weekend, Charlie Murphy – the big brother of Eddie Murphy best known for his Rick James skits  – performed at the Vogue Theatre.   I wasn’t there, but if the show was anything like Murphy’s work on the short-lived Chappelle Show, it must have been hilarious.

This week, there are plenty of highlights to watch out for.   On Friday, Sept. 24, the rudest man ever to come from Ottawa – crude, geeky comedian Tom Green – performs at the Vogue.  Known for MTV’s Tom Green Show, his quirky sense of humor and his brief, hard-to-believe marriage to Drew Barrymore, Green will be performing with the equally weird Neil Hamburger (tickets from $38).

On Saturday, Sept. 25, is Best of the Fest (tickets from $43.75).  If you can only see one show at ComedyFest, this should probably be it.  Top comedians will take the stage for a night 0f fast-paced stand-up and skits.  Perhaps the most anticipated act slated to perform at Best of the Fest is Vancouver’s own Davin Tong, aka Peter Chao. An Internet sensation with millions of YouTube hits, Chao offers his own unique – and often politically incorrect – take on everything from Chinese culture in Vancouver to Justin Bieber.

And, if you’re not willing to spring for tickets, there’s free comedy to enjoy as well.   An entire block of Granville Street will be taken over by ComedyFest on Friday from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. – 11 p.m.  Expect plenty of improv comedy, talent shows and unique buskers.
