$20 Gourmet Lunch at DB Bistro Moderne

When super chef Daniel Boulud opened DB Bistro Moderne and its sister restaurant Lumiere in Vancouver several years ago, foodies rejoiced.

Boulud is widely regarded as one of the planet’s culinary geniuses, and his restaurant Daniel in New York has been lauded as one of the top ten restaurants in the world.  Since opening, DB Bistro Moderne has exceeded expectations, earning fantastic reviews from food critics in Vancouver and across Canada for its sophisticated take on classic French cuisine.

I’m mentioning all of this in order to put the current promotion at DB Bistro Moderne into perspective.  Right now, the gourmet restaurant and its illustrious chef are offering prix fix lunch specials at chain-restaurant prices.   As part of this fall’s “Back to Business promotion,” two-course lunches at DB are $20 and three-course lunches are just $25.

Now, I suppose those prices might sound a bit steep for an average lunch . . . but this is no average lunch.  The prix fixe menu rotates all the time.  Currently, you have the option of starting with a soup du jour or country duck terrine with chanterelles, house-made pickles and whole grain mustard.

For the entree, you can choose between Guinness-battered halibut with apple fennel slaw or traditional coq au vin with bacon, wild mushrooms and spaetzle.   If you’re in the mood for dessert, there’s a bittersweet chocolate bar with chocolate cremeux and sorbet or a rhubarb sundae with oat crumble, vanilla ice cream and ginger foam.

Hungry yet?

If you can’t make it for lunch, there’s a dinner promotion as well, though the deal isn’t quite as good.  $42 will get you a three-course prix fixe dinner with some additional menu options, including a bouillabaisse provencale with butter poached lobster, squid, mussels and garlic rouille.

Has anyone tried the new Back to Business promotion at DB Bistro Moderne?  Does it live up to the high expectations?
