Holiday Skating at Robson Square

Over the holiday break, bring your skates and sense of balance to Robson Square for free skating and live music!

Robson square is in the heart of the city on Robson St. (between Howe and Hornby). The outdoor skating rink is now open until the end of February 2011, including Christmas Day (noon to 5:00 p.m.) and there is live music (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) until Christmas Eve.

If you don’t have your own skates, rentals are $3. There is also a concession to warm up with some hot chocolate and even skate sharpening available on site.

There is something about skating that is so Canadian. Most of us know the feeling of lacing up a pair of skates, your feet all snug in the boot, feeling the heaviness of the blades, the first wobbly glide, the second you get too confident and bail; it’s all part of the magic!

While most parts of Canada rely on Mother Nature for their ice rinks in the form of frozen lakes, Vancouverites have always needed a little help. Although, I do remember the temperature staying below zero degrees long enough about 17 years ago so our family could make an ice rink in our backyard in North Vancouver.

Skating at Robson Sqaure is a Vancouver tradition. Visiting the rink was a Saturday morning tradition for our family as well and it’s also where I learned to skate. We would be at rink early enough to watch the figure skaters who would be the only ones on the rink early in the morning.  I wonder who’s there now on Saturdays at 9 a.m. Is it still the figure skaters? Hockey players? Maybe it’s just early morning risers looking for ice time all to themselves. But even if you are not a morning person the rink is open long hours for whichever hour suits you best.

Happy skating!
