Inside Metropolis at Metrotown – 5 Reasons to Shop at B.C.’s Biggest Mall

With all the amazing local shopping in Vancouver, it’s not often that I feel like going to a mall. But there are definite advantages to mall shopping: it’s indoors (so no worry about the weather), it’s all-inclusive (everything you need in one place), and the parking is (usually) free. And when it comes to mall shopping in the Lower Mainland—all of B.C., actually—there is one place you have to see to believe: Metropolis at Metrotown.

Located just 15 minutes southeast of downtown Vancouver by SkyTrain, Metropolis at Metrotown lives up to its enormous name: it’s the biggest mall in B.C. and one of the largest malls in the entire country.  With over 450 stores, ranging from housewares and discount grocery stores to all of the international and Canadian fashion brands you’ll find on Robson Street, to say Metropolis at Metrotown is “all-inclusive” is putting it mildly. This place is so huge you can literally get lost in it.

I went to Metropolis at Metrotown last week. I wanted a place to take my son—and his stroller—that was indoors and that offered something for both of us. For myself, I took advantage of the staggering array of shops to check out winter sales and new fashions; for my son, we checked out the Metropolis Express, a miniature train that runs from the atrium in front of the Bay to the bus loop. For adults and kids over 12, the Metropolis Express is $1, for kids under 12 it’s free, and all proceeds go to charity.

5 Reasons to Shop at Metropolis at Metrotown

1. 450 stores! Whether its books, electronics or fashion, you’ll find practically everything at this gigantic mall.

2. Family- and kid-friendly. Metropolis at Metrotown is a perfect spot to take small kids. There are plentiful family restrooms—with changing tables—elevators and wide walkways for strollers, and the mall frequently has events for kids; right now, it’s the Metropolis Express train ride. Check the site for current events.

3. East to get to by SkyTrain or car. The Metrotown SkyTrain Station is at the mall, making it super-easy to reach by public transit. For drivers, there’s abundant free parking.

4. Ideal for rainy day shopping. Since Metropolis at Metrotown has virtually all of the stores you’ll find on Robson Street (but with a roof!), it’s the perfect way to shop when you don’t want to get wet.

5. Restaurants, cinema, & unique events. As mentioned, “all-inclusive” is a weak descriptor for everything you’ll find at this mall. Along with the shops, there’s the Famous Players SilverCity Cinema, a huge international food court, loads of restaurants, and a Grand Court that features live entertainment throughout the year.
