Vancouver Wine Festival Tickets on Sale Today

Put thousands of rosy-cheeked wine lovers and hundreds of fine wines from around the world into the Vancouver Convention Centre and what do you get?  The Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, of course.  The 33rd annual installment of the week-long festival will be March 28-April 3 this year.  Dozens of different wine-themed events held at venues throughout the city have been crammed into a jam-packed week.  And tickets for everything go on sale this Tuesday, Jan. 25, on the Wine Festival website.

In total, 177 wineries from 15 countries will be taking part in this year’s festival.  They’ll be pouring 1,650 wines for an estimated 25,000 guests, making the event one of the largest and most important wine festivals in North America.

The theme of this year is the wines of Spain, which means that Spanish wineries and all their glorious Riojas and Riberas will be well represented.  Interestingly, Spain has more acres under vine cultivation than any country in the world.  This translates into an extraordinary diversity of wines.  With so many different vinos to sample, the wine festival is a great setting to find your favourite.

Also highlighted this year will be those tasty fortified wines, including Sherry, Port and Madeira.  Fortified wines have all been strengthened with spirits, most often brandy, which makes for a whole different tasting experience.  42 different varieties will be on sample at the festival.

Among the many events planned this year – from exquisite wine and cheese pairings to exclusive dinners with Spanish winemakers – the highlight, as usual, is the International Festival Tasting.  This massive wine tasting brings together all 177 wineries in a single enormous ballroom in the Vancouver Convention Centre.  Guests pick up glasses at the door for three straight hours of sampling some of the finest wines from around the world.  Expect a festive atmosphere, plenty of engaging stories from the hundreds of winemakers represented and – if you’re not careful – a bit of a headache the next day.  Tickets for the International Festival Tasting, held on March 31, April 1 and April 2 are $95.
