Vancouver Dance Festivals in March, Part I: Vancouver International Dance Festival March 1 – 19, 2011

EDAM Vancouver performs during the 2011 Vancouver International Dance Festival

Lovers of contemporary dance should rejoice: for nineteen days in March there are performances galore—many free with a one-time $3 membership in VIDF—happening around Vancouver as part of the 2011 Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF).

Since 2000, the Vancouver International Dance Festival has brought the best in culturally diverse contemporary dance to Vancouver audiences. For 2011, the VIDF pulls out all the stops, with performances from both local, Vancouver dance companies and from companies around the world, including Germany, Spain, Italy, and Japan.

For a one-time $3 membership fee in VIDF, you can see several performances at the BLENZ Coffee Community Stage in the Exhibition Hall at the Roundhouse for free, including Vancouver’s own battery opera and Now or Never, as well as New York’s Khambatta Dance Company and Swiss-meets-Japanese duo of T42 Dance Projects.

Highlights of the ticketed performances include Vancouver’s EDAM, a pioneer in contact improvisation, the virtuoso flamenco of Spain’s Cruceta Flamenco, and a joint performance from Vancouver’s famous Kokoro Dance and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
