Vancouver turns 125 this Wednesday, April 6, 2011, and the city is celebrating with a big, free event downtown at the Jack Poole Plaza (the outdoor plaza at Thurlow and Canada Place).
The event, called Birthday Live, is a party worthy of the city’s 125th birthday—and everyone is invited! Festivities include an official birthday ceremony—complete with a huge birthday cake, the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, and a visit from Vancouver’s Mayor Gregor Robertson—as well as family-friendly games, food, street arts, and live music performances including 54-40, Bend Sinister, and the Vancouver Bach Choir.
The Vancouver Birthday Live celebration starts at 2pm with a street hockey tournament for families and youth, followed by the official ceremony from 6pm – 7pm. Live music runs from 4pm – 9pm. Find a complete schedule of events here.
Before April 6, take time to nominate and vote in the Vancouver Places That Matter project, a joint effort between the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Heritage Foundation to commemorate 125 places that matter to Vancouverites; final votes must be in by April 6.
Happy Birthday Vancouver!
