Free Money: Tourism Vancouver’s $125 Giveaway

Anyone who showed up at Vancouver’s 125th birthday bash earlier this week was treated to free cake, free music and lots of great free performances.  On the heels of that party, the city is rolling out another birthday-themed initiative.  And this one promises the best gift of all:  free money.

Here’s how it works.  Anyone booking a two-night stay at one of 28 participating Vancouver hotels gets a free $125 gift card.  That’s it.  No strings attached.  The gift cards are redeemable at the Tourism Vancouver visitor centre, located  downtown at 200 Burrard Street.  A list of hotels is available at

Now, my first reaction was “Hmm . . . Is there anything good for sale at the Tourism Vancouver visitor centre – or are we just talking about Inukshuks and maple syrup?”  After some quick research, I discovered that the centre is actually the place to go for tickets to all kinds of entertainment and attractions around the city.

You can buy passes to all the standard sightseeing stuff – from Grouse Mountain to the Vancouver Aquarium – as well as tickets to sporting events and concerts at the Tickets Tonight booth and even transit passes.  In other words, a $125 shopping spree at the Tourism Vancouver visitor centre would be a pretty nice perk.  For a complete list of all the eligible attractions, check out this link.

The Vancouver 125 promotion is already underway and applies to all hotel bookings made before September 30 (Although there is a little asterisk on the official rules that says “while supplies last”).  You get your free card at check-in, so you can start using it right away.  Check out for all the fine print.

While you’re on the website, you can also enter the 125 Vancouver VIP contest.  The winner gets a trip for two to Vancouver valued at $5,000, including return airfare, accommodation at the Fairmont hotels, meals, spa treatments and more.
