How long have you been a Vancouverite? All my life, less the five years I spent in Ontario

Occupation: I work part-time as a marketing copywriter for corporate clients, but I’m better known as a food writer and chocolate educator. My food writing has appeared in Edible Vancouver, Northwest Palate and Foodists.ca. As a chocolate educator, I teach people about chocolate: where it comes from, how it’s made and how to taste it. I’m working on some hands-on classes that will launch next year. My public classes are usually at coffee shops and chocolate shops, but also do private tastings. Favourite place in the city: I love the Seawall for the people-watching. I also love dogs, but don’t have one, and on a good day the Seawall is an endless dog parade.

Best way to spend a Saturday in the city: I recently discovered Deer Lake Park, and it’s quickly become one of my favourite spots. On a sunny day, there are few things better than being on the middle of the lake, in a paddle boat, with a sandwich and a book. You’re still in the city, but it feels like you’ve left. (Even better if that sandwich includes something from Oyama Sausage Company.) On a rainy day, of which there are many, you can’t beat the Vancouver Art Gallery. I also love the Contemporary Art Gallery and Jennifer Kostiuk Gallery.

Favourite Vancouver venue: The Biltmore Cabaret has great live music, and shows are usually less than $20. I’ve seen some great bands there—some bands that play there sell out stadiums elsewhere, but because they’re lesser known here, you can see them in a really intimate venue. The fact that Re-Up BBQ sells their pulled pork sandwiches outside doesn’t hurt either.

Top insider tip for visitors: Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France is a sweet little chocolate shop on East 21st Avenue, tucked away from Main Street. The owner and chocolatier, Anne-Geneviève Poitras, has a great selection of chocolate truffles, hot chocolate and gelato, and her salted caramels are highly addictive.
