Scotch in the Spotlight: Hopscotch Festival, Nov. 14-20

Liquid Experiments -II (Scotch)

Sexy and sophisticated, wine has long been feted in festivals and tastings.  Meanwhile, spirits have been consigned to the shadows – left to be sipped at home and in dark bars.

No longer.  Scotch and whisky, as well as premium beer, take the spotlight during Vancouver’s weeklong Hopscotch Festival, from Nov. 14-20.  More than 250 premium products will be showcased by 60 distributors in the largest festival of its kind on the West Coast.

The main event is the Grand Tasting Hall.  Staged from Nov. 17-19 in the iconic Rocky Mountaineer Train Station – with its vaulted ceilings and exposed timber and brick – the Grand Tasting ($45 admission) features hundreds of premium spirits all under the same roof.  Guests redeem tasting tokens for everything from high-end Scotch and whiskey to gin, tequila and rum.

But Hopscotch is much more than a mere tasting.  Complementing the main event are dozens of master classes and seminars held throughout the city.  Whisky 101 classes offer visitors a primer on the iconic drink, while whisky dinners pair high-end spirits with cuisine at some of Vancouver’s best restaurants.  There are even “whisky smokes” for connoisseurs who enjoy a fine cigar with their drink.  Other seminars take an in-depth look at iconic brands, including Johnnie Walker and Macallan.
