Featured Attraction of the Week: Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art (Free Tickets!)

Welcome to Inside Vancouver’s new “Featured Attraction” series. Each Monday we’ll be featuring a different Vancouver attraction, and will be giving away free tickets to our readers. To be eligible you just need to post a comment.

The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art opened in May 2008 in downtown Vancouver. This public art gallery is named after Bill Reid (1920 – 1998), the acclaimed Haida master goldsmith, carver, sculptor, writer, spokesman and one of Canada’s greatest artists. The Gallery is devoted to understanding and appreciating contemporary Aboriginal art of the Northwest Coast.

Gallery Highlights include over 40 pieces of Bill Reid’s gold and silver jewelry, Reid’s bronze masterpiece Mythic Messengers, several of Reid’s works that are featured on the Canadian $20 bill and a full-scale totem pole, carved by James Hart of Haida Gwaii.

Gallery Hours: Wednesday to Sunday; 11:00am to 5:00pm
Admission: $10 Adults; $7 Seniors/Students; $5 Youth/Child; (plus tax); Kids 4 and under free.

Upcoming Event:
BOOK LAUNCH – Thursday, December 8, 2011:
Bill Reid and the Haida Canoe, tells the story of the pivotal role of the canoe in Northwest Coast art, cultures and communities from pre-contact to present day tribal journeys. Edited and written by Dr. Martine Reid, with essays by contributors Mike Robinson, CEO of the Bill Reid Gallery, Dr. James Raffan, Director of the Canadian Canoe Museum, Peterborough, Ontario, and interviews with BC Aboriginal paddlers and canoe makers.

Bill Reid and the Haida Canoe is a companion book to the exhibition of the same name mounted by the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art that runs until January 8, 2012 and will tour to the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario in 2012.
