Vancouver’s Christmas and winter holiday season gets its official kick-off this weekend with one of the city’s best and biggest Christmas events: the 8th annual Rogers Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, December 4, 2011.

Back with a new route through downtown Vancouver (route details below), the annual Rogers Santa Claus Parade is a fabulous free event for all ages. Not only will the 300,000+ spectators enjoy a host of marching bands, Christmas dancers, elaborate floats, and—of course—an appearance by Santa himself, there are free festivities at the Coast Capital Christmas Square, too, including kids’ activities and live music on the outdoor entertainment stage.

Vancouver Rogers Santa Claus Parade 2011 Parade Route

The Rogers Santa Claus Parade has a new route for 2011: The parade will start at West Georgia Street and Broughton (at 1pm), travel east along West Georgia, turn north on Burrard and finish at Burrard and Cordova. The Coast Capital Christmas Square will be on Thurlow Street, between Georgia and Melville.

With so many spectators expected, as well as road closures, do not drive! Use the Translink trip planner to plan your trip by bus, SkyTrain or Canada Line. And don’t forget to dress warmly!

Remember, the parade is also a fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. You can bring non-perishable food items to donate at the parade (just push them to the front of the curb along the parade route, so they can be collected by parade volunteers) or donate before the parade online.

The Vancouver Rogers Santa Clause Parade 2011 starts at 1pm on December 4. The pre-parade Coast Capital Christmas Square festivities run from 10:30am – 1pm, December 4.
