Featured Vancouverite: Marsha Regis

Hometown: Port-au-Prince, Haiti

How long have you been a Vancouverite? 11 years and 9 months

Occupation:
Film, Television and Stage Actor. You can find more information on my work on my website at www.MarshaRegis.net. My next project is playing the role of Mayme, a boarding house entertainer and prostitute in 1905 Manhattan who dreams of a better life, in the Arts Club Theatre’s production of Intimate Apparel. When I’m not acting, I work as a personal trainer. I’ve owned my own business, Pulse Fitness, for over 8 years.

Favourite place in the city:
Kits Beach, on the grass. I’m from the Caribbean so I love being near the ocean. The water here is so cold, but it’s not worth getting sand everywhere unless I go in the water. I love Kits Beach because I can be near the water and lay on the grass.

Best way to spend a Saturday in the city:
A short run near my home along the seawall in False Creek, followed by a late brunch at Central Bistro on Denman Street or Joe Fortes on Thurlow Street.  If it’s a Sunday, The Sutton Place Hotel is where I want to be—I love their Sunday brunch buffet with live jazz. A walk along Robson Street for some window-shopping and people watching follows brunch. If it’s a hot summer day, I definitely head to Kits Beach. For dinner, I love the delicious Caribbean meals and live entertainment at Calabash Bistro, or if I’m feeling fancy, then it’s dinner at La Quercia.

Favourite Vancouver band:
DNA6 is a great band, and Alex Maher, the saxophonist, is amazing! I really like their hip hop modern jazz funk sound (that’s the best way I can think of to describe it).

Top insider tip for visitors:
If you want to see the city from the top of Grouse Mountain, skip the expensive gondola ride up. Wear comfortable exercise attire, bring water and climb up the mountain. It’s a hard 60-90 minutes, but it feels so good when you get to the top. The gondola ride down the mountain costs a fraction of the price as going up.
