Nautical-Themed Christmas in Steveston Festival: Dec. 3

Dozens of holiday events are happening this month in Vancouver, from Carol Ship cruises to Bright Nights in Stanley Park (Check out Dana’s great post for all the details).  But downtown Vancouver doesn’t have a monopoly on the holiday fun.

This Saturday, Dec. 3, catch a quirky, nautical-themed Christmas celebration in the seaside fishing village of Steveston.  Located in Richmond, not far from the airport, Steveston is perhaps best known for its Fisherman’s Wharf – where you can buy fresh salmon in the summer months.

That same wharf is where Santa will be making an appearance on Saturday as part of the Christmas in Steveston Festival.  Instead of arriving by sleigh, however, he’ll zip into port aboard a decorated whale watching boat.  Here’s a quick rundown of some of the unusual fun happening on Saturday:

  • Historic Christmas tea: noon-5 p.m.  Head to London Heritage Farm, a historic farmhouse not far from the wharf, for a special tea served with homemade baked goods ($8.50).  This will be going on all month.
  • Santa by boat: 2 p.m. Santa pulls into port accompanied by the music of the Fraser River Fiddlers.  Uniformed RCMP will take Santa to the nearby Gulf of Georgia Cannery, where he’ll give out 600 Santa hats.

  • Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides: 2 p.m.-6 p.m. The same horses from the Stanley Park Horse-Drawn Tours will be clip-clopping their way through Steveston.  Rides are cheap (a $5 donation is requested).
  • Herring Sale for Charity: all day (Dec. 3-4). You can’t make this up.  To raise money for B.C. Children’s Hospital, the Steveston fishermen are holding a big herring sale and donating all the proceeds.  Come hungry!
  • Tree Lighting: 4:50 p.m. Not exactly the most traditional Christmas tree, the big Sequoia in Fisherman’s Park will be illuminated just after sunset.  A trio of carolers will belt out some holiday classics before the lighting.
