Vancouver’s Biggest Costume Party: Cos and Effect, Aug 24-26

Time to drag that Pikachu costume out of your closet.  Vancouver’s biggest costume party is set to descend on UBC this weekend – three straight days of costume competitions, SFX makeup battles, workshops and themed dance parties after dark.

This is the third annual installment of Cos & Effect, described as a “costume, cosplay and alternative fashion convention” that brings out the “diverse geek and sub-culture communities of B.C.”

Cosplay, for the uninitiated, is a far cry from your typical Halloween party.  Hardcore fans don costumes and accessories to literally “become” their favourite characters from the worlds of manga and anime, comic books, video games and films.  They take on the body language, personality and identity of the characters portrayed.

And the Cos & Effect schedule is jam-packed with events where cosplay lovers can strut their stuff.  In total, more than 3,000 cosplay fans are expected to attend.  Tickets are $30, with most events in the UBC Student Union Building.

The headliner is the big costume contest (Saturday, Aug. 25, 6:30 p.m. in the War Memorial Gym): 40 pre-selected contestants will battle it out for more than $2,000 in cash prizes.

But there are also dozens of smaller, quirkier events that really steal the show at Cos & Effect, including:

  •  Cos & Effect Idol: Contestants perform in costume and in character.  Ariel from Little Mermaid might end up singing Call Me, Maybe, for example.  Or Iron Man might profess his Lab Bro-Mance for the Hulk. Sunday, Aug. 26, 3 p.m. at the Student Union Building Ballroom
  • Final Fantasy Fight Tournament: Groups of three cosplayers battle it out, showing off their best, over-the-top fighting moves from the popular videogame.  Saturday, Aug. 25, 2 p.m. at the War Memorial Gym
  • Nerdlesque: This 19+ event brings together nerd subculture and burlesque, as cosplayers portraying sultry heroes and villains get down and dirty after dark.  Friday, Aug. 24, 10 p.m. at the Pit Pub in the Student Union Building
  • Steampunk Dance Party: Boogie down in the era of steam power at this dance party, where costumes mix elements of science fiction, fantasy, history and horror.  Friday, Aug. 24, 10 p.m. at the Student Union Building Ballroom.

Going to Cos & Effect?  What are some other can’t-miss events?
