Nochebuena Holiday Market Fair

“Nochebuena” is the Spanish word for “Christmas Eve” and across Latin American countries, and the Phillippines, there are unique ways to celebrate the holiday. In Cuban, for example, the tradition is a family dinner that features a pig roast, while the Phillipines mark it with meal served after midnight Christmas Mass. Here in Vancouver, Nochebueno will be marked by a delightful craft fair, featuring locally made gifts, and homemade treats.

“Our fair this year is pretty late,” says Valerie Lamiel, one of the organizers. “We wanted to put together something that’s close to Christmas so you can do last minute shopping and it could also be a good place to gather and hang out with friends.”

The East Van Studios will be transformed into “a cozy living room”, with 20 vendors, snacks and warm drinks. The fares for sale will include knitware, infused syrups, handmade skincare, jewelry, leather accessories and hand-pressed books. Local designer and artist Jill Southern will also be launching her first book, which is all about Chinatown, at the market.

“Because it’s inspired by Nochebuena, my mom will be making empanadas and there will be warm drinks, like spicy hot chocolate and little added touches,” says Lamiel.

You can visit their website to get a sense of the unique goods that will be available. This will be an ideal spot to hit up for last minute shopping if you want to avoid the mall.

The Nochebuena Holiday Market Fair will be held at East Van Studios, located at 870 East Cordova on Saturday, December 22 and Sunday, December 23 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
