Are you ready to let down your hair, kick up your heels and get your jig on at CelticFest Vancouver‘s hottest dance party (complete with fiddle, mandolin and just maybe some bagpipes)?

On Saturday, March 16 (St. Patrick’s Day eve), downtown’s Vancouver FanClub will be transformed into a traditional ceilidh.  Hard to pronounce but tons of fun, a ceilidh is a kind of Celtic dance party.  Expect an all-star lineup of contemporary and traditional musicians on stage, plus a room full of fellow dancers breaking into jigs, reels and polkas. There may just be a few pints of Guinness and some whiskey involved, too.

If this sounds like your idea of a fun Saturday night, read on for details about how to win a pair of free tickets.

The Vancouver FanClub Ceilidh is part of CelticFest Vancouver, March 9-17, a nine day celebration of Celtic culture featuring more than 70 events and culminating with the big St. Patrick’s Day parade through downtown Vancouver on March 17. (See our preview here.)  The lineup this year features two outdoor street festivals (Celts on the Creek and Celtic Village), whisky tastings, Irish stand-up comedy and, of course, plenty of music.

Taking the stage at the FanClub Ceilidh will be some of the brightest lights in the Celtic music scene.  The main act is a virtual supergroup of Celtic stars, including Qristina and Quinn Bachand, Mairi Rankin, Allan Dionne and Oliver Swain.  Traditional and contemporary music from all parts of the Celtic world will be showcased, with plenty of extended jams to get everyone in the spirit.  The venue is also ideal.  The FanClub has a big floor for dancing, one of the best sound systems in the city and a vintage, dance-hall-style feel.

Just some cultural background: A ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) originally referred to any sort of social gathering in the Celtic world.  More recently, it has become more associated with a traditional dance party.  In Scotland, ceilidhs tend to mix modern pop with traditional Scottish country dancing tunes.  The music is above all cheerful and lively, with everyone joining in on the dancing.
