12 Cheesecakes Face Off in Vancouver’s Cheesecake Challenge

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake at Trees Organic Coffee

Will the prize go to the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake on graham crumb base . . . or the gluten-free vanilla bean apple pie cheesecake. . . or maybe even the obscenely  decadent hot fudge brownie cheesecake tart?

These confections and nine others are facing off this month in Vancouver Foodster’s inaugural Cheesecake Challenge.  And you’re the judge.

The cheesecakes are served in restaurants, cafes and bakeries throughout Metro Vancouver.  The idea is that you drop in throughout the month, try as many of the delicious offerings as you can and then vote for your favourites on the Vancouver Foodster website.

And while Vancouver isn’t especially known as a cheesecake town (that title traditionally goes to New York), the competition is looking pretty intense.  Here are a few of the top contenders:

Triple chocolate stout cheesecake at Darby’s Pub

  • Classic Kitsilano pub Darby’s (2001 MacDonald St.) is serving up a beer-infused triple chocolate stout cheesecake ($4.95).  It’s served on a chewy chocolate crust and drizzled with caramel syrup and milk chocolate sauce.
  • Swanky West Side restaurant Gramercy Grill (2685 Arbutus St.) is going the traditional route with a classic strawberry cheese cake served on a graham wafer crust ($7.50).
  • Putting an entirely new spin on the concept, downtown’s Bella Gelateria (1001 W. Cordova St.) is offering an Amalfi Coast Limoncello cheesecake gelato.  Sorrento lemon zest and Limoncello liqueur infuse cream cheese gelato in this unique creation ($5.50 for a single size).
  • Going for the bacon angle, Feta Bar and Grill (1230 Commercial Drive) has whipped up a banana bacon cheesecake.  The bacon graham crust is topped with Canadian whisky maple caramel and garnished with candied bacon ($9).

A complete list of all competing restaurants and their cheesecakes is available on the Vancouver Foodster website.

Participants are encouraged to gorge themselves on as many slices as possible from March 7-March 28.  Tweeting and Instagramming is highly encouraged (#CheesecakeChallenge).  Then, from March 26-March 31, log into the Vancouver Foodster website and vote for your favourites, based on “originality, creativity, uniqueness, traditional, non-traditional, price, value and most importantly taste.”
