Verses Festival of Words April 8 – 13

Versəәs Festival of Words, Canada’s largest spoken word festival, arrives in Vancouver April 8th-13th. Poets from across Canada will compete to become the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Champion. The winner, receives an all-expenses-paid trip to
Paris as a competitor in the World Championships. The week-long multi-media event also features musicians, storytellers and artists.

Presented by Vancouver Poetry House, Verses was originally called the Vancouver International Poetry Festival. Launched in 2011, it included the first-ever official Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Championship. The festival was rebranded last year, and the new name was chosen from over 250 entries.

Some highlights of this year’s Verses:

Van Slam Finals Night: The top eight Vancouver poets compete to make the 2013 Vancouver poetry slam team. (Mon Apr 8th- 7pm doors/8pm show $12 adv/$15 door, The Rio Theatre, 1660 E. Broadway)

Ivan Coyote and Veda Hille – Author Ivan Coyote and musician Veda Hille team up for a night of music and storytelling. (Tue Apr 9th- 6pm doors/7pm show $12 adv/$15 door, The Grandview Legion, 2205 Commercial Drive)

Aretha Franklin’s Greatest Hits – Chelsea ‘The Voice’ Johnson performs with a live band. Between songs, poets will perform new works inspired by the Queen of Soul. (Tue Apr 9th- 9pm doors/9:30pm show $8 adv/$10 door, The Grandview Legion, 2205 Commercial Drive)

Speak Bloody! – This showcase features Mindy Nettifee from Portland, Tara Hardy from Seattle, Mike McGee from Bellingham, and Beau Sia from L.A. in his first-ever Vancouver performance. (Sat Apr 13th- 7pm doors/8pm show $12 adv/$15 door, The Rio Theatre, 1660 E. Broadway)
