Yes, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy is beloved by millions of fantasy movie fans all over the world. But surely even some of them must have thought, at one point, “If only someone would come along and distill this nine-hour-plus epic into about sixty minutes, with an intermission.”

Well you won’t get your intermission but you will get a version of the trilogy packed into 60 minutes in Charlie Ross’s One Man Lord of the Rings.

The show was a hit at the Vancouver Fringe Festival when Ross first started doing it 10 years ago. Over the last few years the Canadian actor/playwright/self-proclaimed geek has toured his One Man LOTR in Europe, Asia and North America. The show blends elements of JRR Tolkien’s books as well as Jackson’s movie versions.

Among the audience members in One Man Lord of the Rings’ first year was Gandalf himself, Ian McKellan. The British actor was in Vancouver to shoot a movie. He checked out Ross’s show and gave it a huge accolade, saying “If you liked Lord of the Rings, you’ll love Charlie Ross’s version.”

Ross has done this type of thing before. He started out doing his one man shows in 2001 with the original Star Wars trilogy.

One Man Lord Of The Rings plays Feb. 6-9, 2014 at 8 p.m. at the Waterfront Theatre (1412 Cartwright St.) on Granville Island. Following the Feb. 8 show, director TJ Dawe will host a discussion with Charlie about their heroes across the spectrum of fantasy/science fiction movies, writing, and much more.
