It’s been a banner year for craft beer drinkers in Vancouver, with new breweries opening up, new events being inaugurated, bars getting wise to the scene and local liquor stores (both government-run and private) stocking more and more varied brews than ever before.

One of the early champions of this movement is Vancouver Craft Beer Week. Now going into its fifth year, 2014’s edition features 21 events and runs from May 30-June 7. Since the announcement, earlier this week, of this year’s crafty happenings, some have already sold-out – so get your tickets now.

Here are some of this year’s highlights (tickets still available).

VCBW Favorites 2013-11

Opening night (May 30 at Gossip Night Club, 750 Pacific Blvd.) – Prevail, a member of the Vancouver hip-hop duo Swollen Members, hosts the opening night gala, which in the past has been held at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown. This year it’s at Gossip Night Club at the Plaza of Nations, perhaps in an effort to change things up. And the Roundhouse always did seem a little too family-friendly for the event.

VCBW Favorites 2013-10

The 5th Element – B-Boy & IPA Battle (June 1 at FanClub, 1050 Granville St.) – Ten of B.C.’s premiere breweries compete to brew the best IPA (4-8 p.m.).

Craft Beer Bingo (June 1 at Doolins Irish Pub, 654 Nelson St.) – Just how it sounds – bingo. With craft beer. (7-9 p.m.)

VCBW Favorites 2013-19

BeirCraft Belgian Showcase (June 2 at BierCraft Cambie, 3305 Cambie St.) – Drink your fill of Belgian beers – from Gulden Draak to Delirium Tremens and beyond! In the past, this evening has included copious amounts of frites. (6-11 p.m.)

PDX Brewers Delight (June 4 at Portland Craft, 3835 Main St.) – The Pacific Northwest is a hotbed of hops, and Portland has led the way. Join brewers from Breakside, Gigantic, Upright, Basecamp, Hopworks and Occidental for a tap takeover. (5-9 p.m.)

The VCBW Beer Festival (June 6 & 7 at CRAFT Beer Market, Olympic Village Event Grounds, 215 W. 1st Ave.) – The closing event, with tasting glasses and plenty of brewers (and distributors) showing off their wares. If you go home sober, you’re not doing it right. 4-9 p.m. Friday and 2-9 p.m. Saturday.
