For music lovers, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Outdoor festivals and concerts are announcing their lineup listings left and right, and anticipation is running high for sunny days basking in the sun, listening to live music.

While bigger festivals such as the Squamish Music Festival and Pemberton Music Festival often take over the attention for summer concerts, the Vancouver Folk Festival also casts a ray of sunshine on the music scene. For the 37th year, the Folk Fest is coming back to Jericho Beach Park from July 18-20 and bringing together over 60 artists from 12 countries, 7 provinces, and 12 U.S. states.

The Vancouver Folk Music Festival has seen a great revival in the past few years, and is often regarded as one of the best outdoor concerts in the city. Perhaps its the location, the views, the hippy market, or the chilled out vibes, but this festival is something special.

For the 2014 Folk Festival, performance highlights include Joan Baez, a musical force of nature with an incalculable influence on both the songs and politics of our era. Ozomatli, a multi-genre, multi-cultural, Grammy-winning band that brings a street party consciousness full of sizzling attitude, and Frank Yamma, a soulful singer and a gifted guitarist, regarded as one of Australia’s most significant indigenous songwriters. You can find a full list of performers here.

But, it’s almost better to walk into the festival without much knowledge about each performer, because it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll accidentally stumble into a dance party put on by a 12 piece act featuring banjos and washboards that will suddenly become your new favourite band.
