Who says just because you have a baby doesn’t mean you can’t watch the latest blockbuster in the theatre? Not Vancouver Movies for Mommies organizer Laura Grady.

“What better way to feel a little ‘normal’ again then by packing up the baby and watching a flick on the big screen,” explained Grady recently in an email.

Every second Wednesday Grady coordinates Movies for Mommies, a morning movie event at Dunbar Theatre in Vancouver. She also partners with other theatres like the Vancity Theatre on Seymour Street to offer ad hoc movie or documentary screenings. The Movies for Mommies events are tailored to an audience of moms and dads, caregivers and grandparents, all encouraged to bring their newborn to 12 month olds to the theatre.

“I am a movie buff and the thought of missing out on popcorn and trips to the theatre just wouldn’t do. With Movies For Mommies [parents] can stay up-to-date on the latest releases and best of all, we can save the babysitter for date-night,” says Grady.

The doors open at 11:00 and the Vancouver Movies for Mommies events usually start at 11:30. The whole experience is built to be baby-friendly with a slight decrease in movie volume, gentle increase in theatre lighting, ample change tables available and even stroller parking.

Grady updates parental cinema buffs about upcoming shows on the Movies for Mommies Facebook page. For example on May 14, The Amazing Spiderman 2 played at the Dunbar Theatre and previous Movies for Mommies events included films Divergent, Hunger Games, True Grit, etc.

Next up, Movies For Mommies takes over Vancity Theatre May 21 to show 20 Feet from Stardom an Oscar-winning documentary about backup singers.

Movies for Mommies started in Toronto and now happens in Vancouver, Ottawa, Saskatoon and other Canadian cities. The Vancouver chapter of Movies for Mommies has been running for 12 years, with Grady at the helm for the last five.

“The idea is to simply get comfortable with your baby and sit back an enjoy the movie,” says Grady. “If baby is fussing, parents are welcome to roam around the back of the theatre (or make use of the balcony). Bring along a pillow if you like, nurse in the dark. Whatever a parent needs to feel comfortable, goes.”

I think this is a great idea and have shared it with my friends who have babies. Well done!

    • Fabulous work, Vancouver! This is another active step towards including mothers with children in public spaces when possible. When I was a new mum and living in Vancouver, I would have truly appreciated Movies for Mommies when my child was very young (up to 3 months of age) and uninterested and oblivious to the content of the screen.
