Do you enjoy eating? How about talking with complete strangers? And doodling at the same time? Then this may be the event for you.

The 29th instalment of Late Nite Art hits Vancouver on May 31.  Since its inception in 2011, the event has brought together small groups of creative-minded Vancouverites and local artists for an evening that combines “fresh local food, gratuitous beats and explorative artmaking in one tasty package.”

The newest edition of Late Nite Art is slated for the new (and hard to pronounce) Gesamtkunstwerk exhibition space at 1460 Howe Street, near the Granville Street Bridge. After arriving, guests settle in around seven different tables, each well stocked with arts-and-crafts supplies and drawing paper.  Each table is led by a local artist, on hand to provide creative direction as the evening progresses.

Before the drawing starts, however, there’s the small matter of dinner.  The meal consists of “carefully curated” charcuterie boards that, in the past, have featured everything from Moroccan tomato jam and wild mushroom pate to specialty breads and cheeses, according to an article by the Vancouver Sun’s Yvonne Zacharias.

Each charcuterie board serves two people, and – here’s the catch – you have to share yours with a complete stranger.  The idea is that you make a new friend and open yourself up for the night of intense, explorative creativity to follow.

Once plates are cleared, the artmaking begins.  With the music pumping, guests are free to follow their individual muse wherever it takes them.  Supplies on hand include kids’ watercolour kits, crayons and coloured pencils, brushes, pens and more.  The “artists in residence” offer tips on technique and help get those creative juices flowing.  Several glasses of wine later, everyone shares their masterpieces with the table.

By the end of the night, if everything goes well, you will have had the chance to “share amazing food, get your hands dirty and make new friends,” according to event organizers.

Late Nite Art 29 is May 31 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the new Gesamtkunstwerk exhibition space in downtown Vancouver (1460 Howe St.).  Tickets are $35 and include dinner, art workshop and supplies, tax and tip.
