On July 5th, Strathcona Park will be filled with nothing but F-U-N! The first-ever East Van Summer Jam is a celebration of community and culture that will be equal parts music, skateboarding, basketball, food, soccer and fundraiser for a local do-gooder group, The Music Tree.

From 1:00 – 9:00 p.m. local bands like The Boom Booms, The Rascalz, The Funkhunters, The New Royales, Bestie, Kutapira and others will play in Strathcona Park. Besides funking out to talented local music groups, summer jammers can check out the Etnies  skateboarding demo, play in a street soccer tournament and/or 4-on-4 basketball competition. For the hungry, food trucks will be on hand to fuel your playing, dancing and jamming appetite.

Indie-soul band The Boom Booms will be previewing some songs from their sophomore album Love is Overdue produced by Chin Injeti (who’s worked with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Aloe Blacc, SonReal and Drake).

For 2011 Peak Performance Project finalists The Boom Booms, playing at the East Van Summer Jam is a happy continuation of their support non-profit organization The Music Tree.

Lead singer of The Boom Booms, Aaron Ross, co-founded The Music Tree along with Team Canada Basketball veteran Levon Kendall. The society has granted more than $20,000 to community-based non-profit organizations locally and internationally. So far, the Music Tree has raised funds for youth urban agriculture projects in East Vancouver, Vancouver’s’ C.L.I.C.K. (Contributing to Lives of Inner-City Kids), hip-hop outreach projects for underprivileged inner-city youth in Uganda, and a community work project to turn a trash heap into a soccer field, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The East Van Summer Jam is the first big concert and sporting extravaganza to be held in East Van’s Strathcona Park. Before this year’s event, The Music Tree’s annual fundraising gig was the Boom Boom Block Party. The Boom Boom block party happened in the alley behind two of the band members’ home raising #14,000 for The Music Tree in 2012.

Like previous Music Tree events, fifty percent of funds raised will remain in East Vancouver and fifty percent will go towards international projects.

You can grab East Van Summer Jam tickets online here or in-store at Zulu Records, Highlife Records, Red Cat Records, Vinyl Records, and Beat Street Records.
