If you missed the TED talks held earlier this year in Vancouver, then perhaps you can find a some local ideas worth spreading October 18 at TEDx Vancouver.

Professional traveller Robin Esrock, beloved punk rock journalist Nardwuar and local philanthropist Joel Solomon have all graced the stage during past TEDx Vancouver events. This year, a retired MLS Soccer player, a sexologist and a close friend of the Dalai Lama will wow audiences on October 18 at TEDx Vancouver, an independently organized TED Event that will feature Vancouver speakers and artists.

The TEDx Vancouver theme for 2014 is TILT. Event organizers hope that the TILT theme will explore how people are challenging the status quo and engrained patterns of the human pysche.

TEDx speakers confirmed this year (L-R): Jessica O'Reilly, Jennifer Gardy, Peter Gregson, Charles Montgomery.

So far, eight presenters are confirmed for TEDx Vancouver, the biggest TEDx event to be held thus far in Vancouver. Victor Chan, Chip Wilson, Treanna Peake, Jay DeMerit, Jessica O’Reilly, Jennifer Gardy, Peter Gregson and Charles Montgomery will all share how they’re ‘tilting’ and challenging the norm.

Tickets for TEDx Vancouver went on sale earlier this month and are a fraction of the price of the TED talks that took over the Vancouver Convention Centre earlier this year. For $110 TEDx attendees will not only hear from cellist Gregson or clothing empire builder Wilson, they will also witness a live art battle and multiple networking opportunities.

The Team behind this year’s TEDx are Vancouver event planning heavy hitters. Jordan Kallman is President of TEDx Vancouver and also happens to be one half of The Social Concierge event planning duo that hosts two of Vancouver’s best summer parties: the Deighton Cup at Hastings Park and Dinner En Blanc. Kallman is stoked for this year’s TEDx Vancouver.

“Speakers at TEDxVancouver are handpicked for their ability to provoke conversation, as well as new ways of thinking that will empower others to move outside of their comfort zone to do incredible things,” he says.

The conference will be similar to regular TED talks: all speakers have 18 minutes or less to describe and illuminate an idea worth spreading for the audience.

Tickets to the October TEDx event are selling at a good clip, so nabbing one sooner rather than later is a good idea. Where else are you going to enjoy seeing a Playboy TV host (O’Reilly), an epidemiologist/nature documentarian (Gardy) and Guggenheim collaborator (Montgomery) speak on the same stage?
