Vancouver Opera‘s presentation of Stickboy has been collecting rave reviews. Its run is almost over, but you can still see the the world premiere of this searing, acclaimed opera, which ends its run Friday Nov. 7.

Composed by Neil Weisensel with libretto by world-renowned spoken-word artist Shane Koyczan, Stickboy explores the inner life of a young boy impacted by bullying.

Reviewing Stickboy for the Georgia Straight, arts reporter Janet Smith writes, “From the rhythmic jeers of ‘You’re a waste of space’ to the cast of teens in toques and Sorel snowboots to the expressive, graffiti-like projected animation, Stickboy doesn’t look or sound like any opera you’ve ever seen… In this risky investment and what is clearly an impassioned labour of love for its relatively young creative team, Vancouver Opera has a winner here—something new, and a bit dark and dangerous…”

Stickboy features 13 singers, including Sunny Shams in the lead role, accompanied by 11 members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, as well as backdrop animations by Vancouver creative studio Giant Ant.

But you don’t even need to buy tickets to get in on all the Stickboy action. As part of a larger awareness campaign around bullying, four of Vancouver’s most prominent mural artists (Nick Gregson, Carson Ting, Ben Tour and Ola Volo) have been commissioned to produce their personal, thought provoking response to this powerful story though large-scale murals, to be displayed at various locations throughout Vancouver. You can see them here, at least until Nov. 7:
