Imagine a farmers market, but replace the fresh fruits and veggies with the kinds of sugary treats that make make dentists cringe and dessert lovers rejoice: cupcakes, cookies, brownies, macarons and just about every confection under the sun.

That’s the Vancouver Baker’s Market, held on select Saturdays now through December in South Vancouver’s Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre.  The unique market showcases homemade, local baked goods from 20 Vancouver bakers – everyone from pros to student and mommy bakers who want to share their creations with the world.

The lineup of treats changes from week to week.

Sugary staples include beautifully decorated Christmas cookies, cupcakes, French macarons, croissants, breads, scones, chocolates and even homemade marshmallows. For dessert lovers with dietary restrictions, the market offers plenty of gluten-free, organic and vegan options.

Now in its sixth year, the Baker’s Market was born to give Vancouver’s talented hobby bakers an outlet to sell directly to the public, in an informal, farmers-market-style venue.  According to organizers, “So many bakers have their own specialties. They bake their goodies and give it away to their family, friends and co-workers, who eventually will get spoiled and tired of eating their treats. So why not share it with the community?”

The venue for all this sweet fun is the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre, 7646 Prince Albert St. in South Vancouver (two blocks east of Fraser Street at E. 6oth St.). The community centre provides a space for all kinds of activities, from arts programs and performances to local markets.

The Baker’s Market will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, Saturday, Nov. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  More details are available on the Baker’s Market website.
