Vancouver’s best excuse for going into other people’s houses is back this weekend with the always-excellent Eastside Culture Crawl being held from November 21-23rd. On for its 18th year, this festival will give you a great taste of what really goes on in an artist’s studio (hint: magic!). The Crawl involves more than 20,000 people visiting local artists in their studios in the area bounded by Main Street and Victoria Drive north of First Avenue.

One part scavenger hunt and two parts learning opportunity, the Eastside Culture Crawl is a great way to meet your very creative neighbours in the ultra-hip Strathcona area of Vancouver.

For the 18th year, there will be 424 artists participating in 79 buildings in East Vancouver who are showcasing paintings, carvings, wood workings, collages, pottery, and many other strange and delightful pieces of art. Sort of like a self-propelled outdoor art gallery, you can even purchase anything that strikes your fancy. How’s that for a great festival souvenir? A piece of hand-made, original art!

Another great part of the Eastside Culture Crawl is the excuse to go into people’s homes. The Strathcona area is full of beautiful heritage homes with stained-glass windows and original hard wood floors.

The Eastside Culture Crawl is completely free and can be started at any time (from 11am-6pm on Saturday/Sunday). Just head to the Strathcona area (or anywhere on this map) and look out for the signs and balloons that signal whether a house is participating in the crawl.

The Crawl runs tonight from 5-10pm and continues on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm. Get out there, meet some local artists, sample some delicious coffee from the surrounding cafes, and get a taste of East Vancouver that isn’t available in stores.

The Eastside Culture Crawl runs from November 20-23rd in the East Vancouver, Strathcona area. It is free to participate and maps are available at most locations. Or, just follow the signs!
