Reminiscent of the traditional lighting of the Rockefeller Centre tree-lighting in New York, Vancouver is kicking off the Christmas season in Vancouver by hosting its very own tree lighting ceremony this Friday, December 5, 2014 from 5:30-7pm. For this year’s 8th annual tree lighting in Jack Poole Plaza, the festivities are expected to be bigger than ever before.

The free event is very family-friendly and will feature an evening of local food vendors, live entertainment, and fun activities for kids. In addition, santa will be there to help light the trees (there will be four in total), including one that is over 50 feet tall!

In addition to the festivities, the tree lighting ceremony in Vancouver is for a great cause. You are encouraged to buy a bulb for the trees. By “buying a bulb”, you are actually contributing directly the Kids Help Phone Service. You’ll be sponsoring a kid to get the help he or she needs from a professional counsellor.

The tree lighting celebration will be hosted by local celebrity Steve Darling of Global TV and will feature:

  • Sarah Fisher, Singer/songwriter, Degrassi actress and Kids Help Phone Spokesperson
  • These Kids Wear Crowns, Canadian band from Chilliwack, British Columbia
  • Cody Karey, Singer/songwriter
  • Stephen Scaccia, Singer/songwriter
  • BC Girls Choir

The 50-foot, Rockefeller-style Christmas tree will make its way to Jack Poole Plaza two days before the event and will remain on site until the first week of January 2015. The tree weighs in at 7,961lbs and is covered with 64,700 bright bulbs.

The Vancouver tree lighting celebration will be happening from 5:30pm – 7pm on Friday, December 5, 2014. If you can’t make it to the free event, you can still see the trees which will remain in Jack Poole Plaza until January 2015.
