The fresh powder is glistening with moonlight; snowshoes swooshing through new-fallen snow is the only sound. Led by a guide, you work your way through forests of towering hemlock and Douglas fir trees, while the city lights of Vancouver twinkle in the distance, thousands of feet below. Up ahead, a light shines inside a rustic cabin and a you might even catch a hint of chocolate in the mountain air.

Welcome to Vancouver’s unique snowshoe and fondue adventures. All three local mountains offer the chance to explore the alpine scenery after dusk, then warm up in lodges with steaming hot cider and authentic fondue.

Grouse Mountain: Guided groups don headlamps and snowshoes for a one-hour nighttime excursion through snow-filled groves. After experiencing the alpine forest after dark, snowshoers converge on Altitudes Bistro back in Grouse’s lodge for a gourmet fondue feast. Cheese fondue with organic baguette is followed by traditional broth fondue served with everything from chicken and pork loin to wild salmon and Atlantic scallops. Top it off with chocolate fondue and fresh cut seasonal fruit. $95

Cypress Mountain: The Cheese and Chocolate Dinner Fondue Tour takes guests through a wintry forest landscape nearly a mile above the city. After working up an appetite, snowshoers descend on 1926 Hollyburn Lodge to warm up with hot apple cider then feast on a three-course cheese and chocolate fondue meal.  The cheese fondue features homemade bread, steamed veggies, roast garlic potatoes and meatballs, while the chocolate fondue has fresh fruit and angel food cake. $80 (Another version of the tour with just chocolate fondue is only $50.)

Mount Seymour: Head out after dark with a guide along Seymour’s rolling, forested trails, usually metres-deep with snow.  After you’ve wound your way through this enchanted winter wonderland, far from city lights, converge on a unique “snow-lounge” in the wilderness.  Inside the hand-carved snow fort, enjoy hot apple cider and chocolate fondue with fresh-cut fruit and other dipping treats. $57
