In 2012, a proclamation was passed by Vancouver’s mayor Gregor Robertson declaring that the third Friday in December would now be officially recognized as Ugly Christmas Sweater Day in Vancouver. This year, Friday, December 19th will see Vancouverites across the city donning festive fashion in the form of tacky, tasteless, and totally awesome Christmas sweaters.

The official Ugly Sweater Day was first championed by the “Now That’s Ugly Society”, which has been hosting ugly sweater events for the past 13 years. What started out as a Coquitlam house party has blossomed into a much bigger celebration.

In the past few years the Now That’s Ugly Society has been organizing ugly sweater 5k runs and huge parties at the Commodore ballroom that attract over 1,000 guests each year.

The dash, the day and the party all work together to raise funds for The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. You can participate in the official day just by wearing your most garish apparel. Or, you can also buy a $5 Ugly Christmas Sweater Day button, proceeds of which will go to charity.

Over the years the Ugly Christmas Sweater Day has managed to raise more than $100,000 for children’s charity. The organization’s motto “get ugly, grant wishes” says it best!

If you want to participate in the Official Ugly Sweater Day after December 19th (Christmas in July, perhaps?), you can order your own “Captain’s Kit”, which allows you to organize your own ‘day’ with friends or colleagues based around your own schedule. The kit provides you with what you need to throw your own fundraising campaign to grant wishes for children this holiday season. If you organize an event as a captain, you also get a nice-and-ugly toque, 40 official buttons, and a captain’s guide to throwing your own day.

Make sure to grab your ugliest sweater before heading to work, school, or the gym this Friday, December 19th and help celebrate Vancouver’s official Ugly Sweater Day!
