Chances are you’ve never taken a selfie like this.

A new selfie photo studio in Metro Vancouver is giving snapshot lovers the chance to take studio-quality selfies, complete with pro lighting, DSLR-camera-quality images and elaborate props and backdrops.

The Selfie Room is a new business located in Richmond, on the site of Trapped, an “escape gaming” complex where people pay to break out of themed rooms. (More on that here.) It’s inspired by similar offerings in Hong Kong, where the “selfie industry” is already booming. The idea is that guests can come in, choose from an array of backdrops and costumes, then take their own studio-quality images, no photographer required.

The Selfie Room is stocked with six backdrops and more than 1,000 props, from giant microphones to Alice in Wonderland top hats and oversized sunglasses, according to an article by Jenny Lee in the Vancouver Sun. For a 50-minute photo session, a group of two people pays $46. The price per person goes down the bigger the group you have, up to a maximum of 10 people. In case you’re wondering, yes, you can bring your pets, but each pet counts as one person when paying.

Guests have free rein over the 300-square-foot studio and its enormous tickle trunk. Images are snapped using a remote control button and can be viewed on a preview screen. Pro camera equipment and lighting yields results far beyond the typical low-res smartphone selfie. At the end of the session, photos are taken home on a USB drive.

In Hong Kong and other Asian countries, selfie studios have proven especially popular among groups. Wedding parties, families and birthday groups pop in for inexpensive, self-guided photo shoots, which can range in style from silly to more serious, depending on props and backdrops used.
