Lot’s of cities have a parade for St. Patrick’s Day.  Vancouver has 10 days of  Celtic-themed parties, markets and concerts.

CelticFest returns to Vancouver, March 7-March 17, with a packed lineup of familiar and new events where you can wear your green with pride. The festival kicks off Saturday, March 7, with a tribute to the great Celtic punk rockers The Pogues at the Imperial theatre on Main Street. Some of Vancouver’s top bands perform covers from the Pogues’ epic 30-year catalogue.

Festivities continue on Wednesday, March 11, with a pair of whisky-themed events at The Belmont club on Granville Street.  Learn the basics about the most Celtic of spirits at the Whisky Tasting 101 seminar at 6:30 p.m. Or – if you already know the difference between your single malts and your blends – take your knowledge to the next level at the Advanced Whisky Tasting at 8:30 p.m.

Then, start the weekend off with a thrilling show of Celtic choral power. On Friday, March 13, the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir – all 100 voices – performs in the historic Christ Church Cathedral alongside the De Danaan Irish Dancers.

On the weekend of March 14-March 15 CelticFest takes to the streets with Celtic Village. Several blocks of Granville Street are closed to traffic and filled with stages for live music, street performers, sword fighting displays, street food and an artisan market with Celtic wares.

The party really heats up on Saturday night (March 14) with a return of the infamous CelticFest Ceilidh.  This traditional Gaelic gathering, held in past years at the Vancouver FanClub, features lots of live music and dancing and plenty of drink.  Kick up your heels and stomp your boots as the fabulous Paperboys take the stage.

Of course, it wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without a parade.  CelticFest reaches its frenzied finale on Sunday, March 15, with the 11th St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  Thousands of participants – pipe and drum bands, drill teams, Irish and Scottish dance groups and more – march down Howe Street from Davie to Georgie Streets as part of the yearly spectacle.

Finally, on Monday, March 16, get a more refined take on Celtic music when internationally touring Canadian fiddler April Verch takes the stage at the Orpheum Annex.  The virtuoso musician, songwriter and step dancer offers a brilliant interpretation of traditional Celtic music.
