Mosquito: Gastown’s new dessert & bubbly lounge

Mosquito Dessert + Champagne Lounge

“Life is short. Eat dessert first,” declared Ernestine Ulmer, an American author from the late 1800s. Smart lady.

We’ve always been extremely partial to sugary treats, and when we learned that a dessert and bubbly bar had recently opened in Gastown, our interest was piqued immediately. And so were our tastebuds!

Mosquito, a beautifully-designed 47-seater lounge (think: Art deco meets light industrial) in Vancouver’s oh-so-cool Gastown neighbourhood, states that they have a simple offering for patrons: They’re a “champagne bar without the caviar. A dessert bar without the frosting.”

As you and yours sip on delicious flutes of Kir Royale (a fave of ours), indulge your palate with beautifully prepared and presented sweet eats, such as their popular peanut butter and milk chocolate bar, served with caramel popcorn, caramelized banana jam and popcorn gelato, or the melt-in-your-mouth dark chocolate crémeux (pudding) with caramelia espuma, cocoa streusel, caramelia pearls, maple syrup, and a touch of vanilla salt. Yes, it’s true, we are suckers for chocolate desserts!

More of a savory snacker than a sugar muncher? No problem! Dominic Fortin, executive pastry chef at the Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler, and designer of Mosquito’s appealing menu, has curated several “non dessert” options for you. We highly recommend that you try the truffle oil and parmesan popcorn and the toasted Marcona almonds with olive oil, piri piri pepper and rosemary.

Folks looking for a cozy spot to chill after a long day or loved ones wishing to feed each other sweets in an intimate setting, Mosquito is a definite must-visit.

Located at 32 Water Street, Mosquito is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 5:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.
