Ready to solve a murder mystery on the streets of downtown Vancouver?

A  newly updated tour is offering guests a chance to collect clues, track down suspects, decode secret messages and track down a fictional killer – all while getting to know one of the city’s iconic neighbourhoods.

Dubbed Crime in Downtown, the tour is the first offering from the revamped Vancouver Mysteries, now run by Forbidden Vancouver (the company that specializes in “scandalous” historical tours of the city’s dark side). It’s a bit like the board game Clue, but played out on a real-life scale. Tour goers assemble into squads of two-five “detectives” and rendezvous in a secret downtown location for a debriefing.

The premise: Local journalist Jimmy Capello has been found murdered. He had plenty of enemies. Now it’s your job to find out who did it and why. And the clock is ticking.

Detectives are equipped with a special kit including clues and maps. They then fan out into the city, looking for hidden items, decoding secret messages and solving a series of brain teasers.  Was the perp the millionaire heiress, who recently inherited a fortune from her dead husband? Or maybe the local casino owner with mob ties? Or was it that brilliant psychiatrist, who happens to have a few loose screws of her own?

Groups have two hours to scour the city on foot and use their collective brainpower to identify the killer, the murder weapon and the motive. (All teams are given a score and ranked on the Vancouver Mysteries website.) Along the way, of course, they get an in-depth, self-guided tour of some of the city’s best-known sites. Game designers from Forbidden Vancouver spent months researching, writing and planning the mystery, and there’s no shortage of historical detail and intrigue.

Already a top-ranked choice on TripAdvisor, Vancouver Mysteries is planning to expand its lineup this May with a brand new Secret Mission, a spy thriller played out in real life in downtown Vancouver. Tours for its current Crime in Downtown offering ($25 per person) run every 15 minutes throughout the week (from roughly 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and can be booked online.
