Get out your reusable shopping bags! Spring has sprung and summer is on its way…and with that, Vancouver Farmers Markets are gearing up for a busy season.
Three of the seven markets are opening this week (Yaletown, Trout Lake, and Kitsilano). The West End market opens on May 30, and three others follow in June.
Here’s the schedule of what’s on when.
Markets opening in May
Yaletown
When: Thursdays, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., from May 7 to October 29, 2015
Where: 1200 Mainland Street, Vancouver
Located downtown in the urban Yaletown neighbourhood, this market is convenient for busy local shoppers after work. Find it right outside the Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain station.
Trout Lake
When: Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., from May 9 to October 24, 2015
Where: 2015 Lakewood Drive and 13th Avenue, Vancouver
This market started with 14 farmers squatting at the Croatian Cultural Centre in 1995. It’s now Vancouver’s flagship farmers market, and it’s convenient to the laidback Commercial Drive neighbourhood.
West End
When: Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., from May 30 to Oct 24, 2015
Where: Comox Street at Nelson Park
Another downtown Vancouver market, this one is in a high-density residential area near English Bay.
Kitsilano
When: Sundays, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., May 10 – October 25, 2015
Where: Since the regular location at Kitsilano Community Centre is currently experiencing construction, the market is being moved east temporarily. The permanent location of this West-side neighbourhood market borders on a pleasant park and is a five-minute drive from Kitsilano beach for a picnic.
Until mid-June, the market will take place at Riley Park at 30th Avenue and Ontario Street, east of Kitsilano. After that, it will return to its regular location at West 10th Avenue, in the parking lot of Kitsilano Community Centre.
Markets opening in June
Main St Station
When: Wednesdays, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. (new hours for 2015), from June 3 – October 7, 2015
Where: 1100 Station Street
Located at the bustling commuter intersection at Main and Terminal, this market is right at the base of Main Street Skytrain Station and convenient to the long-distance bus and train station. It’s another market that’s frequented by chefs and locals looking for dinner fixings.
Kerrisdale
When: Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., from June 13 – October 10, 2015
Where: 5500 East Boulevard
This West side neighbourhood market has over 40 vendors. It’s held in the shadow of Point Grey High School and just up the street from Kerrisdale Arena on East Boulevard between 37th and 41st Avenues. The boutiques along 41st Avenue are nearby.
Mt. Pleasant
When: Sundays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., from June 14 – October 11, 2015
Where: 2300 Guelph Street
This relatively new market is already turning into a neighbourhood gathering place. It’s located a short walk from some of Vancouver’s hip breweries, such as Brassneck Brewery and Main Street Brewing.
