Hundreds of Free Concerts Announced for the 2015 TD Vancouver International Jazz Fest

The biggest music series of the summer is coming to Vancouver this June. And hundreds of concerts are completely free.

Nearly half a million music lovers are expected to turn out for two solid weeks of jazz, blues, world music and more as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, June 18-July 1. Now in its 30th year, the festival is bringing a host of headliners to the city, including hip-hop legends The Roots, blues guitar icon Buddy Guy, jazz fusion pioneer Stanley Clarke and vocal powerhouse Lisa Fischer.

But in addition to ticketed performances, the festival also offers fans literally hundreds of free concerts throughout the city. Here’s a quick preview of when and where to catch just some of the free shows:

Downtown Jazz Weekend, June 18-June 21:The free music kicks off with this expanded 4-day “mini festival” staged at the Vancouver Art Gallery plaza and Robson Square, in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The tunes now start pumping on Thursday and Friday, with a host local favourites including the Dal Richards Big Band and Rumba Calzada taking the Georgia Street Stage from noon until 7:30 p.m.

Things heat up over the weekend, with music on two main stages from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Local and international acts featured include Fond of Tigers, John Korsrud’s Latin Ensemble, Freshly Ground and the Kristin Fung Band. Downtown Jazz Weekend also offers fans not one but two separate beer gardens, a swarm of food trucks and a family zone for kids.

Granville Island Jazz, June 19-June 30: Free mid-day music each and every day of the festival is on tap on Granville Island. The Public Market Stage showcases top jazz acts at noon daily, while Performance Works follows with free performances at 1 p.m. Performers include the David Blake Trio, Waxwing, Dan Reynolds Trio and Curtis Nowosad Quintet.

Jazz around Town, June 19-June 30: Three separate downtown venues host free concerts and workshops throughout the festival. Catch groundbreaking music in Gastown at the Ironworks Afternoon Series (235 Alexander St.) from June 22-June 26 at 5 p.m. Acts include Handmade Blade and Ayelet Rose Gottlieb.

Meanwhile, gospel and more is on tap at St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church (Burrard and Nelson Streets) from June 19-June 30, with performances from the Good Noise Gospel Choir, City Soul Choir and more.

Finally, music buffs can sit in on workshops at Tom Lee Music (929 Granville St.) from June 22-June 26, featuring Kris Davis, Eric Boeren and others.

David Lam Park Jazz Weekend, June 27-June 28: The popular waterfront park in Yaletown is the setting for another packed weekend of free music. Big crowds turn out to see top-tapping funk, jazz and world music acts including Mazacote, Banda Magda and The Ballantynes on the big David Lam Park Stage, from noon to 8:45 p.m. both days. The festival atmosphere is complemented by a beer garden, food and artisan market and family zone.

For a more intimate experience, pop into the adjacent Roundhouse Exhibition Hall where hard-driving jazz and experimental acts including Tiny Pyramids and Elk Horn are performing from 2:30 p.m. to 6:40 p.m. both days.

Canada Day on Granville Island, July 1: The festival finishes on a high note with a full day of free music on Granville Island on Canada Day. Acts perform from noon to 9:30 p.m. on four separate stages: Performance Works, the Public Market Stage, the Railspur District Stage ane the Ron Basford Park Stage. Headliners this year include the Kate Hammett-Vaughan Quintet, Company B Jazz Band and Tambura Rasa.
