Anime Evolution Festival Hits Vancouver

Photo Credit: Rale PhotographyCalling all anime fans! The three day Anime Evolution festival, which celebrates Asian culture, Japanese animation and gaming is returning to Vancouver between 17-19 July at the UBC new Student Union building. The festival started back in 1998, as ‘Anime Showcase’, a one-day event from the SFU Altered Reality Club (ARC), but soon grew in popularity, with attendance rising from 300 to more than 1200. From cosplay to performance, role playing to meeting the celebrity voices behind beloved characters, the Anime Evolution festival is one of North America’s most popular fan convention events and tickets are still available

AE2TheWillBoxKey events at the festival this year include ‘A New World: intimate music from Final Fantasy’ a live musical performance which will take place on Sunday July 19 at the University of British Columbia’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Music Director Eric Roth and Pianist Benyamin Nuss will feature as part of an 11-piece ensemble and will be performing new arrangements of music from the Final Fantasy franchise.  Super fans can get up close and personal with their idols at Meet and Greet dinners, score photos and autographs of stars like Michael Daingerfield whose voice roles include Braeburn (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), Han Solo (Lego Star Wars), and Ace Ventura (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), and Phil Guerrero the original Host for the Zone on YTV.

If you’ve got a competitive spirit, prepare to be challenged. Cosplay fans can meet inspirational cosplay stars The Starktorialist and Tarah Rex, and take part in the cosplay contest. Vocalists can sing in the hotly-contested Anime Idol sing-off, and if you’ve dreamed of a chance to make anime your life, you could win a chance to start your career  in the Voice Actor Idol event.

AE3For fans of gaming there is plenty of offer: all  role playing events are free– no supplies are needed– just sign up early to secure your seat. Connection Games and Comics will be providing their games library for a multitude of board game action, which will include the new version of Catan: eessentially it’s a three-day, one stop shop for all things anime.
