Have $250? Always wanted the thrill of owning your own thoroughbred racehorse? Vancouver’s Hastings Racecourse has the deal for you.

A new club is giving race fans a chance to pony up a few hundred dollars for fractional ownership in real racehorses. All that’s needed to join the new Hastings Race Club is $250, no horse experience required. Currently capped out at 200 members, the group has already proved a runaway hit, according to an article in the Globe and Mail by Wendy Stueck.

Members get special perks like reserved grandstand seating at the race track, as well as access to the backstretch, where they can mix and mingle with the other owners and their horse. And, of course, should their steed end up in the winner’s circle, owners get their share of the purse.

Currently the club owns two horses, a pair of 2-year-old colts named Bobby and Square Dancer, who have yet to race at the course. They were each purchased from the U.S. for $30,000 by horse industry associations at the track, which hope to drum up interest in the sport of racing.  Club members’ annual fees help pay the costs of feeding, vet care and training for the animals.

Importantly, members get access to a dedicated trainer, so they can begin to learn the ins and outs of selecting a horse and getting him up to racing speed. The ultimate goal is that some of the fractional owners will learn enough to go out on their own – buying their own horses and keeping a culture of racing alive at Hastings. Though the facility is leased through 2016, changing consumer tastes mean that it’s harder and harder to get people in the door to enjoy a day at the races.

Ready to get into the horse-racing business?  You’ll have to wait until next season. The club is full at the moment, but at the end of the season in October the partnership is dissolved and you, too, can own a piece of what could be tomorrow’s Triple Crown champ.
