If you haven’t visited West Vancouver in a while, now’s the time to cross that bridge. One of the city’s most scenic festivals kicks off on July 31 and there are plenty of reasons to check it out.

Located right on the waterfront with a jaw-dropping view of Stanley Park and the Lion’s Gate Bridge, the Harmony Arts Festival takes over Argyle Avenue from 14th Street to 16th Street.

For 10 days until August 9 there’s programming for everyone from kids to seniors–and much of it is free.

Here are a few highlights.

Watch a movie under the stars

The Cinema in the Park will screen nine free movies in John Lawson Park from classics to children’s films to blockbusters. While some seating is provided, you can also bring your own blanket or lawn chair to set up on the grass.

The series kicks off at 9 p.m. on July 31 with Mamma Mia! and continues with favourites like Casablanca, The Princess Bride, and Dirty Dancing. See the schedule here.

Reflect on balance through art

In the tent outside the Ferry Building Gallery, this year’s juried Group Exhibition features the mixed media works of artists along the theme “Exploring Balance in Art: Harmony and Discord”.

Artists such as Adele Maskwa-iskwew Arseneau, Enda Bardell, and Caroline O’Neill Liggett will each bring their own perspective, and all the artworks are available for purchase.

Tie-dye a T-shirt

As part of Creative Kids Day on August 8, the hippie vibe will take over John Lawson Park. Everyone is invited to tie-dye a T-shirt; the cost is just $5 for a T-shirt, or free if you bring your own.

The groovy gathering takes place from noon to 4 p.m.

Shop the market

An art market will be set up from on Argyle Avenue over two weekends (July 31 to August 3 and August 7 to August 9).

From contemporary art to leather handbags, ceramics to jewellery, this is where to find that unique little something to bring home.

Catch a sunset concert

Each night of the festival there will be a different group performing in John Lawson Park as the sun dips down over the ocean. Concerts run from 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Performers include the Paperboys (on August 1), a spirited folk group that’s hard to define but easy to enjoy.
