It’s billed as “Vancouver’s ultimate backyard bbq”, with tug-of-wars, burlap-sack races, country and bluegrass music, and more. For one Saturday afternoon in September, 2,000 people dressed in their best country-and-western attire will meet in Stanley Park for a down-home picnic.

Expect some hootin’ and hollering as the steaks hit the grill.

Unbuckled, which takes place on Saturday, September 12, is a new event this year, organized by the people behind Harvest Haus. Like Harvest Haus–the stylish Oktoberfest blowout that took place for the first time last fall–Unbuckled is a party for adults 19 and over that is an immersive, themed experience.

It all takes place at the sprawling grassy Brockton baseball diamond in Stanley Park. Since British Columbia’s liquor laws have relaxed over the past year, organizers have been able to get the space approved for thousands of people to roam freely with a beverage in hand.

Like Dîner en Blanc, there’s a dress code: participants are encouraged to wear their “best hillbilly outfits” and “the sexiest cuts in plaid finery”. The site will be kitted out with hay bales, pickup trucks, burlap, and other country-western touches.

Team sports are scheduled and included in the price of the ticket; registration for these opens on August 12 for teams of 8 to 15 people. Games include wheelbarrow races, mechanical bull riding, and water-balloon tossing.

Live music will set the atmosphere, with local acts The Matinee, the Tishomingo String Band, and sisters Robyn and Ryleigh Gillespie leading the hoedown.

In the sustenance department, food available for purchase includes beer-can chicken, smokies, corn dogs, burgers, steaks, ribs, corn on the cob, and watermelon.

Tickets are $30 (plus service charge), and they are selling quickly and are expected to sell out. See Unbuckled for more info.
