With the release this summer of the biopic Straight Outta Compton, interest in pioneering gangsta rap group N.W.A. has never been higher. Because of this interest, as well as a Vancouver connection, the city is getting an exclusive, one-day N.W.A. Pop-Up Store on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Straight Outta Compton follows the rise of N.W.A., the South Central L.A. rap posse best known for rapping about mean streets of Compton, California, and also for jumpstarting the careers of such hip-hop visionaries as Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre (as well as Ice Cube’s Barbershop movie franchise, but let’s not go there).

However, many may not know that the owner of Priority Records, the label that launched N.W.A., went to school at the University of British Columbia. After university, Bryan Turner moved to Los Angeles where he started the label and signed N.W.A., along with Snoop Dogg, Mack 10 and a distribution deal with Master P’s label No Limit Records. Turner is even featured in a few scenes in Straight Outta Compton.

NWA Straight Outta Compton Platinum

As a result of his career as a rap mogul, Turner – who has since branched out into film and technology – has amassed over 30 gold and platinum record sales awards. Bryan’s nephew Daniel is organizing a silent auction of the records Saturday Aug. 29 at the N.W.A Pop Up Store at Fortune Sound Club (147 E. Pender St.) from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. Half of all proceeds will go to the BC Children’s Hospital.
