Tickets to the 6th Annual B.C. Beer Awards & Festival went on sale today (Aug. 26). The annual beer-appreciation event is being held Oct. 24 at the Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Drive).

What makes this year’s festival exciting for craft beer enthusiasts is that the local beer community has, apparently, declared 2015 to be the Year of the Sour Beer. Organizers of the B.C. Beer Awards have challenged B.C. Brewers to create some flavourful sours, all of which you’ll be able to try at the festival.

The Brewers Challenge is a returning feature of the festival. New this year is the Richards Buell Sutton LLP Rookie of The Year Award for the province’s top new brewery. (And, with 22 new breweries having opened in BC in 2014 and an estimated 20 opening in 2015, competition will be fierce.)

Last year’s BC Beer Awards judging drew over 460 unique entries from over 60 BC
breweries and brewpubs, according to the press release, with winners selected in 17 distinct categories. Judges included certified beer judges, cicerones, sommeliers, journalists, as well as noted beer and food lovers. The BC Beer Awards adheres to standards set by the Internationally recognized Beer Judging Certification Program (BJCP).

CBC radio announcer Stephen Quinn will host the awards ceremony, while the festival portion features over 50 breweries (and cideries) offering samples of their wares.

Early Bird tickets are $30 (plus tax) and are available now until Sept. 30, 2015 at ticketzone.com. On Oct. 1, the price goes up to $35 – although, last year, the event sold-out before the regularly priced tickets were released.

Tickets include a tasting glass and four drink tokens.
