The first annual Yule Duel is coming to Gastown Dec. 3. The caroling competition is expected to draw thousands of people together. Funds raised will go to May’s Place, a hospice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside neighbourhood.

Over 20 choirs will gather in Gastown with a goal to raise $20,000. Choir styles will include everything from barbershop harmony to gospel, and will showcase festive costumes, choreographed dances and holiday lyrics.

The competition will take place on a series of outdoor stages. Presented by The Bloom Group and the Gastown Business Improvement Society, the event is inspired by Figgy Pudding, an annual caroling competition and charitable fundraiser in Seattle.

“This is the first time Vancouver will host a street-carolling competition so we expect it will draw a great crowd,” said Jordan Stewart, President of the Gastown Business Improvement Society Board of Directors, quoted in a media release. “The evening will feature all different types of music from barbershop harmony to gospel, and draw talent and spectators of all ages.”

Choirs include the Gentlemen of Fortune choir, which is famous for its barbershop style and a cappella music, Sweet Scarlet, Sound Eclectic, Cyrilika Slavic Chamber Choir and 8Wings Vocal Ensemble. The carolers are encouraged to showcase their finest costumes, choreographed routines and holiday lyrics. A sing-off on the main stage will determine who wins the title of Yule Duel champion, as decided by a panel of celebrity judges and the spectators themselves, and the Gentlemen of Fortune, famous for their barbershop style and a cappella music.
