Vancouver is about to party like it’s 1992.

That’s the last time a public New Year’s Eve celebration was held in the downtown core. And it looks like this year’s bash is going to blow that one away.

NYE Vancouver is all set to take over Canada Place for a New Year’s Eve party to remember, Dec. 31.  The waterfront fete features live music, food trucks, family-friendly fun, a special paid licensed zone, not one but two countdowns, and of course some pyrotechnics to cap off the night.

The festivities kick off at 6 p.m. sharp on Canada Place Way, near the Coal Harbour waterfront, between Howe and Burrard streets. Some of the city’s hottest bands will be rocking out on the 102.7 The PEAK Stage, entertaining crowds all the way to midnight. Meanwhile, revellers can nosh on street eats from Vancouver’s top food trucks. Special exhibitions will keep the party pumping, and you can also expect plenty of on-site broadcasts from news teams covering the event.

Then at exactly 9 p.m. it’s time for “3-2-1 … Happy New Year!” Well, kinda. For all the parents with little kids (and those who can’t make it to midnight), Vancouver is holding a special “Early Eve” countdown, three full hours before the stroke of midnight. There will even be a short, 3-minute burst of fireworks to mark the moment.

But what about booze, you’re wondering. NYE Vancouver is offering guests access to a special ticketed viewing area, where drinks can be purchased. The CF Pacific Centre Viewing Lounge boasts VIP views of the fireworks, and it also has a full bar and plenty of gourmet food cart options. Unfortunately, tickets ($55 adults; $23 youth 6-18) are currently sold out, but organizers may release more in the lead up to the event.

But the highlight of any New Year’s Eve bash is the countdown. New York has the ball drop in Times Square. Paris has pyrotechnics from the Eiffel Tower. In Vancouver, there will be a yell-along countdown to mark the final seconds of 2015. Then, at precisely the stroke of midnight, fireworks will launch over Coal Harbour. The 11-minute display will be synchronized to music and can best be viewed from the Vancouver Convention Centre East Plaza, as well as the Stanley Park Seawall, from the Rowing Club to the 9 O’Clock Gun.

NYE Vancouver is Dec. 31, from 6 p.m. to 12:20 a.m., at Canada Place Way in downtown Vancouver. The celebration site is easily accessible from Waterfront Station, and guests are highly encouraged to take public transit, bike or walk.
