Grab your dancing partner and get set for another summer of free salsa, rumba, tango, and jive (and much more) lessons and performances at Vancouver’s Robson Square. Up until this point, my boyfriend and I have never danced together (not even swaying awkwardly at a club), so I’m really curious to know how we’ll fare together on the dance floor!

The fun happens Sunday afternoons (from now until August 28) and Friday nights (from now until September 2) under the dome of Robson Square (800 Robson Street).

Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square is run by Jennifer and Stephen Dancey of the Dancey Ballroom and SalsaVancouver.net. Basically, you show up at 3pm for a half hour salsa lesson by some of the city’s finest salsa instructors. Beginners (that would be me) are welcome, so don’t let your lack of dancing experience keep you away.

The lesson is followed by social dancing when you and your date can practice the moves you learned during class. Stay also for dance performances by local dancers demonstrating a range of styles, like flamenco, hip hop, and bachata.

And, if you’re having too good of a time to call it a night, stay for the after party from 7:30pm to 10pm when you can enjoy the mellow beats of Kizomba and Zouk.

See the Sunday Afternoon Salsa website for the schedule of instructors and performances.

Friday nights become magical with the Robson Square Summer Dance Series organized by DanceSport BC. The annual summer event has been running since 1991 and attracts more than 500 participants every night. The evening runs from 7:30pm to 11:30pm and includes general social dancing, showcase demonstrations at 9pm and 10pm, and at 8pm, a free beginner lesson led by top notch instructors.

Hopefully, by the last waltz at 11:30pm, you and your date will have improved your dancing skills and be even more in sync.
