This week’s roundup includes two teen TV series with subversive spins on classic pop culture material, two TV series about women dealing with divorce in very different ways, and one TV show that follows what happens when a safe-shooting gal meets a reckless dude.
Interested? Well, let’s get things underway then.
First up, the fantasy comedy-drama TV series No Tomorrow, started shooting in town today (August 15).
The series centres around a safe-shooting quality-control professional named Evie (Edmonton’s Tori Anderson), who develops a relationship with the thrill-seeking Xavier (Joshua Sasse, who also starred on the locally shot TV crime-drama Rogue).
Xavier, who believes the apocalypse is imminent, convinces Evie to make a bucket list of things to do before the world ends.
If you knew the world was about to end, what things would you include on your “apoca-list”?
You can compare your list to the show’s when the series premieres on the CW on October 4.
Also getting underway today is Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, which starts shooting Seasons 3, 4, and 5.
The comedy-drama series revolves around self-help author Abby McCarthy (Lisa Edelstein) as she faces the onset of divorce with the help of her gal pals Phoebe (Beau Garett), Delia (Necar Zadegan), and Jo (Alanna Ubach).
Speaking of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Paul Adelstein, who plays Jake Novak on that show, also cowrote My So-Called Wife, which starts shooting Season 1 here on August 29.
Inbar Lavi stars in the new series as a con artist who is able to manipulate men and women to fall in love and marry her, while she takes off with their money and just enough secrets about them to prevent them from taking any action against her.
Unfortunately for her, her latest victims are on her tail just as she’s about to strike again.
The cast includes Parker Young, Aaron Douglas, Mark Harelik, and Rob Heaps.
Disney’s movie of the week The Descendants 2 starts shooting in Vancouver and Victoria on August 25, continuing until October 15.
This sequel follows the adventures of the adolescent offspring of Disney’s infamous and dastardly villains.
Returning cast members include Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Mitchell Hope, Jedidiah Goodacre, Brenna D’Amico.
China Anne McClain (who will play the daughter of Ursula from The Little Mermaid), Anthony Rogers, and Ursula Taherian will be joining the gang, along with the progeny of Peter Pan’s Captain Hook and Beauty and the Beast’s Gaston.
In other adolescent-driven matters, all-American character Archie will be hitting the small screen—albeit in a darker take on the wholesome, upbeat comic.
Riverdale will start shooting Season 1 on September 7.
In the series, every character will have a secret, and shadiness will lurk beneath the pleasant surface of Riverdale.
K.J. Apa landed the lead role as Archie.
The cast also includes Camila Mendes (Veronica), Lili Reinhart (Betty), Cole Sprouse (Jughead), Ross Butler (Reggie), Ashleigh Murray (Josie), and Casey Cott (Kevin Keller).
Even former teen TV series heartthrob Luke Perry, of the original Beverly Hills, 90210, is back on screen, this time as Archie’s dad.
As for shows about to leave from our slice of the world, The Recall, which commenced its shoot in B.C. on July 25, wraps up on Saturday (August 20).
In the sci-fi thriller, five friends are enjoying some r ’n’ r at a remote cottage by a lake. Little do they realize that’s all about to end as Earth is being invaded by aliens who are conducting mass abductions.
The cast includes R.J. Mitte, Jedidiah Goodacre (previously mentioned in The Descendants 2), Niko Pepaj, Laura Maria Bilgeri, and Hannah Rose May.
Blade star Wesley Snipes will also kick some alien ass in the film as he defends the Earth as the “Hunter.”
Well, that’s it for this round, but be sure to keep your eyes peeled as you make your way around town. After all, when you’re in Hollywood North, you never know when you might run into a villainous teen, an alien-hunter, or Archie. Or maybe all three together at once.
