There’s the ballet – and then there’s the Nutcracker ballet. Whether you’re a devoted dance enthusiast or a newbie to the classical art form, this holiday performance is a can’t-miss event for adults and kids of all ages.

This year, Vancouver’s beloved Ballet BC welcomes the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to the stage in a very-Canadian version of the age-old ballet classic. Here’s what you can expect from this magical performance.

Each year, the annual production is updated with new twists and fresh takes on the traditional Christmas story, and this year’s show promises to leave a prominent impression.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, one of Canada’s leading ballet companies, dazzles audiences with talented artists, captivating costumes and set decor, and complicated choreography.

Since the first adaptation of the story in 1891, the ballet has been recreated by dance companies all over the world. Each performance builds upon the original story to add their own unique twist, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet makes it a truly Canadian experience with the addition of Canadian scenes such as a snowy pond hockey game and a battle on Parliament Hill.

The story centres around a young girl named Clara and her Nutcracker Prince (a Christmas gift from her uncle). Clara enters a life-like dream where her Nutcracker comes to life, and they enjoy a whirlwind of adventure alongside the Sugar Plum Fairy and the evil Mouse King. In a fantasy world filled with battling mice and soldiers, living dolls who dance, and sparkling sugar plum fairies, Clara’s  escapades in the magical kingdom epitomize all that Christmas dreams are made of.
