Filming in Vancouver: Milo Ventimiglia and Amanda Seyfried arrive, Project Blue Book wraps

Amanda Seyfried is among the stars coming to town to shoot the feature film The Art of Racing in the Rain.

This week, a doggone feature film is getting underway.

But as that one gets started, a TV series that depicts a top-secret U.S. Air Force project to address UFOs is finishing up production on its first season.

Here’s a quick look at what’s coming and going from Vancouver’s screen scene this week.

Milo Ventimiglia

First up, the feature film The Art of Racing in the Rain begins filming today (April 30) and continues shooting until July 23.

Directed by Simon Curtis (Goodbye Christopher Robin), this is an adaptation of Garth Stein’s bestselling 2008 novel.

Amanda Seyfried

This story revolves around a family dog named Enzo who reflects upon what he has learned from his owners, including a race-car driver, played by Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us), and his wife, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables), who is battling brain cancer.

Martin Donovan

Full details are limited and the full cast hasn’t been revealed but it will also include Martin Donovan, who was among the cast of the Vancouver-shot TV series Beyond, which wrapped up filming Season 2 in August 2017.

Kevin Costner

Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy) is among the producers and Kevin Costner (Hidden Figures) has been reported to in negotiations to be the voice of the dog.

A release date is yet to be announced so stay tuned.

Aiden Gillen

Meanwhile on a completely different note, the TV series Project Blue Book (previously known as Blue Book) began filming on December 6 and wraps up on Thursday (May 3).

With production based in Surrey, the series, which shot ten episodes for its first season, details real-life U.S. Air Force investigations of UFO phenomenon in the 1950s and ’60s, which was called Project Blue Book.

Laura Mennell

Aiden Gillen plays Dr. J. Allen Hynek, an astrophysicist and UFO skeptic recruited by the air force to be the top-secret division’s chief scientific advisor.

His wife Mimi, played by Laura Mennell (The Man in the High Castle), has ambitions of her own that go beyond being a homemaker. 

Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries) plays the head of the department who clashes with Hynek.

The cast also includes Ksenia Solo, who plays a woman who befriends Mimi but is much more than who she appears to be, and Michael Harney, in the role of an air-force general with a lengthy career.

The series will premiere on the History Channel though a date hasn’t been announced yet.
